I really liked making this quilt, but it’s good to have it done. My husband found a perfect mural for us for the backdrop, and it echoed all the right colors.
No big thoughts today, just a bit of happiness over the outcome and more than a few photos.
What I found interesting about this backing was that close-up it appeared random. But from a distance, I detected a rhythm of color and pattern.
This week I gave it to my daughter-in-law, Karen. When I was trying to figure out the borders, I asked what her favorite colors were: those were the colors I had planned for. Obviously this quilt was meant to be hers, as when she saw the beginnings of the blocks — the squircle (square with rounded shape) — she said that was one of her favorite motifs. And from then on, I stitched with her in mind.

This is so fun and colorful. A labor of love with all the applique. It turned out beautifully Elizabeth. And the hubs found the perfect location for your quilt photo. You have the best murals. I’m jealous.
It is magnificent! Never had a yen to do any kind of circles, but this! I can get into squircles. The quilt has an old fashioned look to it – and the quilting just adds to that – but with a touch of modern. Your quilts always give me a kick to get back into the sewing room.
And now my questions: Did you just randomly cut background and squircles, and then randomly put them together? Or was there a plan? And are the squircles hand appliqued or machine sewn to the background?

But it helps to know who you’re making it for – gives one purpose for finishing a quilt No doubt Karen is thrilled with it for it’s lively colors and prints. You made this beautifully, Elizabeth! And your hubs picked an ideal spot for photos. Gosh, you live in a place with lots of photo options! None like these exist anywhere near me. I enjoyed seeing the backing too. Great choice. Though I know you enjoyed making this quilt, I also empathize with your “it’s good to have it done” feeling. On to the next quilt, right?
Well, first, I just like saying squircle. 🙂 If there is a more perfect spot for a photo op for your quilt, I don’t know of one, so kudos to your hubs for suggesting it! The backing is so good, too! Congratulations on finishing your marvelous squircles quilt! I LOVE everything about it. The narrow dot and wider dot borders are perfect as is the spot you chose to display it. Thank you again for the pattern and sew-along. I need to decide if I am going to hand quilt mine – I’m a little nervous about having a long-armer doing a silk quilt, but aware of the time commitment doing it by hand would require.🤔

Wow what a beautiful quilt! So wonderful that it will stay in the family and you can visit it sometimes. As a fairly new quilter, I am just beginning to learn how the size of the blocks relative to the overall quilt impacts the design. Sounds simple I know, but I tend to make bigger blocks (probably because fewer to make to get to the finish line? that sounds so lazy!) but I really love the repetition of this size into the whole. And of course all that plumpy squirqueness is just so good in these colors.
This is such a fun quilt! Love the photo shoot location too.
