When I mean rounding up the grannies, I don’t mean that we captured all the grandmothers and took them out west and let them roam the prairies under watchful eyes of cowgirls. I mean that I gathered up all the Granny Square blocks I’d made from May, June and July and the final six, so now my herd quilt was complete.

The first block of the quilt is on the left, and the last one is on the right. The hashtag was #ohgranny2026, but I noticed a lot of creativity in how our group marked them, and every variation of that hashtag made me smile.
To backtrack: This started in May, with the free pattern handout here OR here. I developed the pattern so it’s quick and painless, and after making 30 blocks, I can say the process generally went quickly. I really did have a great time putting combinations together; it’s funny how attached we can get to our collections of fabrics, gathered over many years (my oldest scrap is about 50 years old). This quilt is my very own quilting stash index, and is one of two possible quilts that will go with me to the fabled Old Folks Home, that event hopefully far off into the future. (The other quilt.)

Group 1 (8 blocks) • May 2026

Group 2 (8 blocks) • June 2026

Group 3 (8 blocks) • July 2026

Group 4 (6 blocks) • August 2026 • Final Set

So here it is: Oh, Granny! I used small cornerstones (1″ finished) and simple sashing.

The back was a Denise Schmidt cheater cloth with a Pickle Dish design. In pink!

The label. This time I put it against the side, kind out of the way of the quilt backing’s design. We went down to one of our favorite places for some pictures:

Thank you, dear, for holding my quilt.
My friend Rosalyn called me last month and asked me to come over and look at the quilts that her husband had inherited, and lo and behold! there was a granny square quilt. It was made by Carmen Ursul Davis Poole, his grandmother, who was born in 1903 and passed away in 1993.

Some close-ups of the squares.

And it was made by hand! You can see the little stitches on the sides of the pink gingham square.
I’ve had the best time looking for, and looking at, all the fun Granny Squares from those who decided to sew along:
Carol • Allison • Linda (who is making smaller squares) • Susan • Ramona • Melanie • Wendy • Juliann (All of these are Instagram links)
Happy August!

And since I see Granny Squares wherever I seem to go, here’s an outfit from Macy’s in California, if you need to match your quilt.

Can’t believe you’re done! Honestly, I don’t think I would be complaining about roaming around on the prairie. I would be OK with that.
I believe I had a crocheted granny square vest in about 1973.
As always, love sewing with you!
I’m really digging the backing. The front is of course outstanding. I am afraid I will have to pass on the outfit.
I love everything about this beauty!!
That backing is THE BEST and pairs perfectly with the granny squares
I love everything about this quilt.
That backing pair is perfectly with the granny squares.
The whole piece is absolutely delightful and wonderful photography!
How fun to find this today. I finally decided on the outer border for my quilt and now I am motivated to get that finished. I would also like to join your herd of grannies wandering on the range 😊
Wowza! It’s beautiful! I love the scrappiness. And omg on that backing! It’s all so very fun and cozy and pretty.
My Grannies have fallen by the wayside, but they perked up at “prairie” – we would love to roam that prairie! I really have fun with that pattern and want to try the larger ones next time!
What fun to see a vintage granny square quilt just when yours is done! And I love the back for yours. Almost makes me understand why the lady who cleans for me folds one of my quilts on the couch so that the back shows…
Your Grannies look great and I love the pickle dish backing. I also really like Carmen Ursul Davis Poole’s with the red background. I still have quilting and a border to do…
I knew immediately that this post was going to be about your Granny Squares progress, but I was definitely surprised that it is already a fully finished quilt. What a beautiful finish. The sashing and cornerstones give each block the space they need to breathe and be enjoyed, and that backing print is perfection.
What a pretty quilt! I love the little corner stones, too! My grannies are still hanging out on the design wall while I procrastinate. Haha.
It looks fabulous! That will definitely brighten up your bed in “the home”. It’s really such a fun showing of your stash.
Well you sure provided fodder for an interesting mental image of grannie being corralled. Thanks for the giggle. Your quilt turned out beautifully. It’s great that you’re considering taking it to the Old Folks Home with you. But golly… I’m much closer to that point in my life (physically and geographically) than you are, and I haven’t given it a thought. Given that my body temperature always runs hot, I can’t imagine needing a quilt in old age! Still, you’re making me wonder what ONE quilt I would choose to take with me. That’s a tough one! And I’m also wondering where in the world my own Granny Square quilt might be. I made it in 2013 and don’t recall where it is….
Seeing these granny blocks makes me so sad I got rid of all of my scraps 😦 Our quilting group here is making small holiday items for sale in a small shop that raises money for projects, and I also got rid of all my holiday fabric. *sigh* So I ordered a Christmas fat quarter bundle–haha. But it still makes me sad when I think of all the cute Christmas fabric I collected over the years. Oh well. Onward…
I love your bright and clear Granny with her pink underskirt – she is ready for adventuring (on the prairie?), and not the Old Folks Home just yet! I love putting together combinations of my scraps too – the delight when something just WORKS is the best, isn’t it? I love some of your color combinations and I don’t even know all the stories behind those fabrics, but you get all those extra layers of fun.
What a great quilt! And it came together so fast! I love that you shared it’s one of the two quilts you’re keeping with you “in your later years 😊” and I enjoyed going back and reading your story about the other one. When I finally get my current projects under control, I may yet make one of these, so thank you for sharing the pattern!
I just love the scrappiness of your granny squares. And I enjoyed seeing all the other inspiration you put in your post too. It’s motivating me to be scrappier if that’s a word. I’ve rarely made a true scrappy quilt. Seems my color palette is always pretty controlled. Thanks for sharing the granny block. I revisited my download for inspiration. Maybe I’ll get started one of these days. I’m not getting nearly as much quilting done as I thought I would this summer but have a boatload of ideas and am not sure what to start next. Too many options. Too much fabric. Never enough time.
