Turning of the Year

Thus times do shift, each thing his turn does hold;
New succeed, as former things grow old.
Robert Herrick, from Ceremonies for Candlemas Eve

I don’t know how many more turns this life does hold, but I’m getting better at recognizing them. That’s what living for a while will do for you: give you practice at the painful, help you recognize delight, and deliver the ability to watch calmly as another year turns.

We get our fall this time of year, here in Southern California. We pretend to have colorful autumn arrive with the Northern and Eastern States, putting out our russet and pumpkin and burgundy decorations all through October and November, but really our trees don’t have their turn until December. I gather up a few to rest on my dashboard as I drive around (for we also do that in Southern California), and celebrate the colors.

I made the top to this quilt in December 2020, so it’s appropriate that I finish it when we have turned away from the pandemic, its memory triggered only when we find our cloth masks in the sock drawer, or the junk drawer, or realize that a box of N95s has taken up permanent residence in our hallway closet, a talisman to ward off the unthinkable.

It’s nice to be able to crunch around my “walking” park, the leaves crisp underfoot, finding places that echo the muted tones of this quilt, Pomegranates.

Many of our leaves go from green to brown, a dimming of our usual colorful landscape. It’s as if they say, we gave it all for the year and now are tired, just needing rest. I can understand this. I have times of dimming, as well as times of bright.

Herrick reminded us that “each thing his turn does hold” and I don’t have to have only one season of quiet and rest. I have had many years to watch the days grow shorter, the nights grow longer and then again, and decades to watch the reversal of it all.

I’m lucky that way. Hopefully, so are you–

Quilt # 298 • 42″ square, with a simple single-binding
No label, as I’m sending this off and think they may like the backing of this quilt (a treasured piece from Alexander Henry) as well as the front.

Another post about this quilt

Yes, it is up in my pattern shop and for December, you can choose your own discount if you want to stash it away for New Year’s sewing (another turning for all of us).

  1. The batiks were the perfect choice for the pomegranates quilt. I like batiks but I would never know how to choose fabrics for a quilt. I just stand and look at them in the quilt shop with a blank look. I have made a few in BOM’s but they were already chosen by the quilt shop. I do love the ones I have made. As always, outstanding displays for your quilt. The tree one is the most impressive to me and I’m still trying to figure out how you got that thing hanging in that tree! Surely, that can’t be your husband standing back there?

  2. I love the colors of this quilt! Those fabrics are perfect with the great design. The photoshoot of it is such a warm, fall shoot. Great job!

  3. I always loved this quilt, your friend’s fabrics are so luscious! Such beautifil picture, as always.

Like you, I still run across masks here and there, I think I need to gather them all up and put them in a bag so I don’t often see them as the feelings that briefly comes when they do show up is not pleasant.

  4. Such a lovely ‘fall’ quilt. I have a handful of fall quilts. It’s the only time of year I enjoy the rusty red colors. This time of year those hopeful bright thoughts about a new year start creeping into my mind. Sometimes shadowed by the fact that there are less years to come but then I brush those thoughts aside and focus on today.

  5. Come on- fess up! How did you get your quilt to look like a cone in that first quilt photo? The deep burgundy leaves are my favourite when Autumn arrives here down under. The setting for your photo shoot is perfect! I love that you have given the recipients the option to use the back of the quilt also! Who doesn’t love a two-for-one quilt?!

  6. Thank you, thank you for the BB+ blog posts. I bought this when it first came out and used it for making blocks in different sizes. Never designed with it. But I want to try it. How do I find the 4 posts? Your pomegranate quilt is lovely. The colors are wonderful.

  7. Back in the day when my first daughter was about 2 she took a Fall walk with Grandma and amused her by saying, “Leaves rattled.” I love the muted colors of your quilt.

  8. love this and the back is GORGEOUS. I wish I could figure out a way to give the backs more play. I have thought about pinning back a corner when they’re hanging. Raining and warm here today, kind of feels like spring, but I fully understand that is an illusion!!!

  9. I love everything about your quilt – those are MY colors!! (Though sometimes I wonder which colors are NOT!😊). At another “turning” my motto continues to be “cherish each day.” Hope you are enjoying the season!
