Houston, We Have a Quilt Top.

It started here.

I sewed as I watched and listened to the Artemis II crew do their moon flyby, thrilling me and everyone here on earth. This quilt is supposed to be paying homage to our Constitution at the ripe old age of 250, but now the red, white and blue also now honors these four astronauts, and will be linked in memory to this wonderful week. And that lower right photo? That’s at the Goldstone Deep Space Center in the high desert in California. We visited there last year, and were happy to find out that Goldstone was assisting with the tracking.

I did Yvonne’s trick (aptly her blog name is Quilting Jet Girl). When she slices the quarter-square triangles again, she carefully aligns the ruler with the seam to get a perfect perpendicular slice at that point. I followed this tutorial, a link courtesy of Carol, but there are many hourglass tutorials out there. After seeing Carol’s rendition of this quilt, I purchased a digital version of the pattern here.

Meanwhile, I keep watching the NASA Artemis II feed from Mission Control Center in Houston:

And sewing.

And watching, and sewing.

Finished the quilt top today, one day before the landing over here on the West Coast. Yes, I’ll be watching not only the live NASA feed, but also the skies to the West to see if I can see anything. I’m hopeful.

Stained glass view. It’s about 72″ square.

View from inside the house towards the arbor where I photograph a lot of my quilts.

Happy Landing, Artemis II. Godspeed!

  1. It looks like you had or found the perfect fabric for the borders, Elizabeth. I’m am glad you also found something to be excited about. The best part of the mission was their photo of Australia and our weather pattern we were experiencing. Hopefully splashdown is successful. Apparently that is the most dangerous part of the project. Lovely quilt!

  2. It’s lovely and a perfect tribute to the crew. Think it will be too cloudy tomorrow to see much, but hoping we hear those memorable sonic booms. I missed them once they diverted the space shuttles back to FL. I’ll be watching too.

  3. The story was as much fun to read as was looking at the quilt top. I love the play on “Houston we have a problem” because the quilt is so non-problem, though I must admit my first thought was that it was your offering for the next Houston show until I started reading. =)

It was good you had something exciting to watch while producing all those HSTs. Are the stars in the border appliqued or did you find a fabrid printed accurately and in the right proportions?

  4. I thought all those hour glass blocks looked great. But then to see them surrounded by such great fabrics for the borders made it even better. Well done. And a wonderful nod to Artemis too. God speed on the return trip.

  5. It makes me happy to see R, W, & B used as a symbol of the country rather than as a symbol of a political affiliation. Like many, I have found it increasingly challenging to just be a patriotic American without proclaiming my party leanings — not that I don’t want people to know how I feel, but there are many situations in which that is just not an important fact.

Recently, I went to a political protest that suggested we wear R, W, and B. The counter-protestors showed up in the same colors. Afterwards, we went to the nearby farmer’s market where we were eyed carefully by many people trying to figure out where we belonged on the political spectrum. I was amused/disheartened by the experience.

We were hopeful we could see the launch of Artemis II from our deck, but were disappointed. If we had gone to the beach (1/4 mile) where we could see further down the coast without obstruction, we would have had a great view, but I was making dinner and we most CERTAINLY couldn’t have delayed THAT for an opportunity to see a historic event, right?

Quilt related: Are those border prints from M & S?

  6. Unbelievable they splashed down exactly on target and on time ! Love that we are twinning again!

  7. Wow! Looks great. I really like it and would make one except I finish one with the quarter square triangle blocks not too long ago. It was scrappy. I called it Holy Hour as it has a monstrance in the center with a host in the center block – used for prayer.
