Eye Candy for the End of Summer

While the original version of the word meant light, frothy entertainment, this grouping of quilts was more serious, found in Primal Forces, an exhibit in the BYU Museum of Art. They were part of a traveling show from SAQA, and I was delighted to see them while visiting there for a wedding this summer. One of them, the quilt with “rocks” and “water,” I first saw in France while at the Carrefour Quilt Show in the Alsace region. It was like seeing an old friend. And yes, I always love that overhead thread sculpture by Gabriel Dawe that I led with. It’s too hot to do anything else, so enjoy the quilts!

NOTE: I put some of them together in “galleries;” click to enlarge.

Sonoran Spring, by Stephanie Nordlin

I loved the shaded window above these two quilts, reflecting the shapes in an architectural way.

I love the simplicity/complexity of the quilt above. It just vibrated on the wall.

Thank you all for your well wishes in the last post. It’s taken me longer than I wanted to write back to you, but I’m most grateful for all the lovely things you said. We did survive the “storm” and as I read about the weather that’s been going on at my friend Carol’s home this week (tornados! rain! lightning! more rain!), it confirms that we Californians are all a bunch of wimps. But thanks for understanding how excited/worried/confused we get by a change in our (usually) moderate weather.

Okay, summer. You can head on out, now. It’s back to quilting…

(All the colors in the center have been quilted)

P.S. Summer leaving? HA! In Southern California, our summers stretch outward into October. We have more hot days ahead of us.

  1. How lovely to see Diane Firth’s quilt “Across the Desert” amongst these beauties! I was lucky enough to meet her in Geelong for the Art Quilt exhibition a few weeks back. And a companion piece to this one was hanging in our own Central Goldfields Art Gallery until last week! I shared them to Insta. She is in great company. What wonderful pieces of art- Slot Canyon and Crumbling are truly beautiful! Thanks for sharing! I hope the weather moderates somewhat for you soon. Just think what a wonderful temperature quilt you will have!

  2. Thanks for sharing this exhibit. Beautiful works of art. Each was unique and powerful. I thought I had a favorite until I kept going.

  3. Amazing pieces of work. Art quilting is a special form of expression. I always enjoy seeing the pieces created, but I can’t relate my quilting to it in any way. It’s like comparing kindergarten coloring to college oil paintings in my case.

I’m ready for summer to start for us. Our highest temp so far this month has been 83* yesterday.

  4. Isn’t it amazing the variety of designs and textures creators can think up?! Astounding. What an inspirational show to see! It’s nice of you to share, especially when you’ve been focused on the storms and heat in your area. We’re all good and ready for summer to be over, though that means, here, that it’s time for tropical storms and hurricanes. Sigh.

  5. Thank you for the fabulous fiber feast. Just what I needed to see after a week away. Now I’m inspired to get back at it in my own small way.

  6. Well, just took about 100 hours to load with my Internet connection that is about as slow as dial-up here at the little house on the north coast. I loved them all, but Seaglass was particularly appealing to me. I am just loving those watery colors lately.

  7. So glad you survived last week’s storm. Thank you so much for sharing these thought-provoking quilts. The quilt artists highlighted the stunning beauty of our fragile planet.

  8. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful works of art that I would not otherwise be able to contemplate and enjoy!!

  9. Well, it’s Michigan but we are scheduled for more 90 degree weather next week. I remember summers when it never hit 90. Loved all the quilts. Love the creativity and inspiration for each. Thank you so much for sharing this exquisite display.
