100 Quilts

Catrina, Day of the Dead Quilt • 2008

My apologies if this should arrive in your mailbox; I’m fixing up old posts and I never know what they are going to do!

Black and White and Catrina All Over

I was in a Black-and-White challenge for my guild back in Virginia some time ago and the challenge arrived near October, when the Day of the Dead was on my mind. I printed off the ancient Catrina drawing, took my cues from discussions of Day of the Dead altars (always four levels, with food, marigold blossoms, offerings) to gussy up the quilt. I sent it off to the challenge, but wasn’t entirely happy with it.

Quilt #66 • 25 1/2″ square

So I gave her a Spring Cleaning when it came back. I found milagros from a store in Phoenix, took off most of the offerings and hung the silvery charms around the quilt. Better, but as usual, still not satisfied. It will have to do for now. Here are photos of the back, and other details.

It is interesting to note that in these early quilts, I have a lot of learning to do!

Cowboy Quilt

Last Saturday I spent the day setting these blocks with sashing, putting borders on. The fabric has a cowboy print, so I call it the Cowboy Quilt (real original). Saturday night I spent the evening taking off the borders and ripping out all the sashing because I hated it. Sunday I re-set the blocks with new sashing and corner blocks and sewed the borders back on. Better. Here’s a shot of the work. (I like to keep my hands busy while I listen to Conference.)The limiting factors were that I’d bought the fabric in La Platte Maryland and Material Girls when I was there visiting and there was No More Cowboy Fabric in my stash. The second limiting factor was I was determined to use what I had–no purchases. I have some interesting cowgirl fabric for the back–it will be scrappy.

Since it is the Cherry Blossom Festival time in Washington, D.C. (we lived there for a year), here’s some of my shots.

These pinks are the color of my granddaughters’ cheeks. No wonder I like this color so much!

Kaffe Fassett Quilt

Finished the first batch of English papers, so could get back to the Kaffe Fassett quilt I’d been working on.

Today, I attached the inner pink border, then the wide grey-blue jungle print that I fell in love with at the Quilt Show. I don’t have a name for it, but we keep saying “It’s pretty wild,” around our house. I’ll have to go and look in my Victorian Quote book for something blowsy, overblown and suitable.

At first, I wasn’t so sure about all these fabrics thrown together, but it’s grown on me.
